The news was confirmed in a news post earlier today on the official Tomb Raider Tumblr page, and later referenced in a Square Enix blog posting from American and European CEO Phil Rogers.
Despite strong review scores and approximately 3.4 million units sold in the first four weeks of release, the Tomb Raider re-boot failed to meet the high expectations of publisher Square Enix, despite optimistic with first-week sales figures.
However, the new title was essentially announced last week when news broke of a Tomb Raider comic series that follows-up from the ending of Lara’s 2013 adventure and will “lead directly into a game sequel”, said comic writer Gail Simone. Simone also said that Lara’s new adventure will involve “globetrotting”, rather than the more-isolated locale of this year’s game.
A date hasn’t been announced for the new Tomb Raider, but with the comic series launching on 26th February 2014, it might be a fair to assume that it will arrive later next year. Although no specific platforms were cited, the blog post from Phil Rogers mentions the sequel as being “next-generation”, so we can probably expect it on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and (possibly) the Wii U.
