Nintendo Reveals New Wii & Wii U Accessories in Japan

Japan will soon receive the Wii U Premium console set in white, a colour normally reserved for the Basic model. Despite the lower price, Basic model Wii U units have sold poorly in comparison its Premium brother, likely due to the accessories and games included in the larger pack.

Perhaps the most significant accessory announcement was the new GamePad battery. For the Wii U owners who just can’t get enough Monster Hunter action, the 2,550mAh battery model has double the battery life of the previous power pack, a common complaint for the device.

Those still holding onto their Wii consoles (perhaps for some GameCube or Rhythm Heaven Paradise action) might be interested in the new battery pack and cradle charging kit, an accessory that we somehow didn’t get over the life-span of the original console, at least not without third-party assistance.

Ostensibly, since most hardware has no region limitations, there is no reason that Nintendo fans here couldn’t import the accessories. While having to install the beefier battery pack in your Wii U GamePad might sound like a pain, Nintendo have (thankfully) fitted the GamePad battery compartment with standard Philips cross-head screws.

Hopefully, Nintendo of Europe will follow-up shortly on whether the new accessories will reach our shores.

I do hope this carries on into better 3DS XL batteries in the future!
