Apart from gaming, one of my other hobbies is knitting as you may have guessed. Being swamped with assignments, work and Christmas stuffs, my mind turns to ways to combine my hobbies. I learned how to knit a long time ago, but only really started taking it seriously a year or so ago, poring over books, tutorials and patterns looking for ways to push things further. There are a few video game-related things I’d like to knit… and here’s how I would do them.
First up, the easiest is Hobo Phoenix’s hat. In Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright has swapped his sharp suit for a more dressed-down look, including this funky little hat. I’d love to knit a replica. Being a massive Ace Attorney fan I don’t even care that it has ‘PAPA’ on it in bright pink letters. This hat would be knitted in the round, with a fold-up ribbing border. The PAPA would be embroidered on, because it’s probably the easiest way to do it.
The next item is Young Phoenix’s jumper. Not spoiling too much of the third game for those who haven’t played it, but one case is a flashback one featuring a sneezy younger Phoenix, wearing a cuddly homemade jumper. It’s a toss-up between the English ‘P’ or the Japanese ‘RYU’ on the chest… either one might get awkward questions. Because of Phoenix’s scarf, it’s difficult to see the neck of the jumper but you could safely assume that it’s a standard crew neck. The heart and the P/RYU could easily be done in intarsia – blocks of different colours.
Skyward Sword was released recently, but my favourite Legend of Zelda game is Ocarina of Time. I’d like to knit an ocarina, and the various ‘holes’ would be sewn-on buttons instead. Not being too familiar with creating 3D shapes from scratch yet, this is going to have to wait a little while.
Maybe a better place to start would be knitting block-shaped things. There are a few knitted/crocheted Portal Companion Cubes floating around the internet, and it would be fun to try and design my own. But what would also be really cool is Minecraft blocks! Think about it – you could make a block for every material. The only problem I can foresee with this is not really being able to tell what each one was… unless you were a Minecraft player, of course. For multi-tonal blocks like dirt or grass, you could strand multiple colours and knit them all at once to get the mixed up greens/browns.
And finally, one thing I’d love to make one day, space permitting, is a recreation of a scene from Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Background components could be knitted or sewn and Kirby and the Prince would be ball-shapes with bits and pieces stuck on. Or maybe I could just knit Kirby in his tank form…
