Just Press Start

One of the first things I noticed, and still one of my favourite things, about Lost Odyssey is that you put the disc in your console and then a few seconds later you get a screen which says “Lost Odyssey: Press Start”.

There is no parade of (often unskippable) corporate logos, with their little animations which they must think are so cute but just become bloody annoying when you have to sit through them for the umpteenth time. There is just “Press Start”.

It’s so simple. It’s so obvious. You put the game disc in, and then you get to play the game. That’s it.

Why is it, then, that it’s become so unusual for this to be the case that Lost Odyssey stands out from the crowd? Is there anyone who actually wants to know who published the game but is incapable of finding out from looking at the box? Why can’t more games let you just press Start?

To be honest, Simes, I think a lot of them use all the corporate logos as a cover up for the loading time.

A lot of games do let you skip them once a certain amount of loading time has passed, hence why you’ll see me hammering away at Start or X or whatever like a mad fool until the front screen comes up!

At 50 Million bucks a game I don’t see that changing anytime soon!

Yeah, but who are they advertising to? Do game devs really not know about Havok except through splash screens on other games?

And, perversely, I really hope it’s not about load times, because that means that some games spend ages loading stuff before you get to see a menu, and then ages again afterward…

I am also terrible for mashing away at X to get the game to start - that’s what I like about GRAW2 (except for the relatively tiny bit with a load of text)

Even Puzzle Quest has all that. PUZZLE QUEST!
