Regarding the availability of the new release, Torin Retting said:
“Killer Instinct Classic is a complete port of the original Killer Instinct arcade game, and you can ONLY get it with the Ultra Edition of Killer Instinct.”
The port will be available in two variants: one based on the original 1.4 Arcade ROMs, and another modeled after the 1.5D release that rebalanced gameplay. Retting clarified:
“In fact it is a complete port of TWO versions of the Killer Instinct arcade game. It includes the original arcade ROM (v1.4) with all of the classic, fan-favorite glitches, and the revised version (v1.5D) that came out later to fix things like Cinder’s infinite combo.”
The re-release of Killer Instinct will include some new features, too. Retting commented: “In addition to this we’ve added cool extras like a training mode, frame effects like scan lines to emulate a CRT and galleries of the original sprites.” Sadly, online multiplayer is not currently planned, though the team have been “talking about it a lot.”
The original Killer Instinct launched in arcades in 1994, with a popular SNES port released the following year. The arcade-only sequel, Killer Instinct 2, eventually made it on to the Nintendo 64 in the form of Killer Insinct: Gold, albeit with some changes. When asked about Killer Instinct 2 making it to Xbox One, Retting concluded: “No news for Killer Instinct 2 for Xbox One… yet.”
