GameMaker Studio Standard Free for Limited Time

The announcement was made on the official GameMaker Blog a few days ago, where it was met with great enthusiasm from engine fans. “I’ve been wanting to recommend Studio to friends for a long time, but the resource limits of Studio Free make the program borderline unusable,” said one user.

GameMaker Studio “Free” is normally available at no cost, but the Standard edition removes all limitations on resource use and allows users to create massively-complex experiences.

Traditional coders have been known to to look down on more stream-lined engines like GameMaker for their simplicity, but don’t be fooled: it’s a fully-fledged 2D game engine complete with optional scripting, and has been used to craft some of cream of the crop when it comes to indie titles, including Hotline Miami and the original PC version of Spelunky.

With no end in sight for the growth of indie games, there are more choices than ever before for newcomers to game development. Along with GameMaker, Stencyl, Construct and Unity (when paired with PlayMaker or Antares Universe, at least) all offer visual scripting, allowing those scared off by coding the chance to design the game of their dreams.
