Microsoft to Unveil Next Xbox on 21st of May

It is expected that the console maker will finally cement the long-rumoured name and specifications of their new console at the event. The news was confirmed in a blog post from Microsoft spokesperson Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb last night, which said:

On Tuesday May 21st, we’ll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment. On that day, we’ll be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on, Xbox LIVE and broadcast on Spike TV if you are in the US or Canada.

On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we’ve been working on.”

Other details, such as price and launch-date specifics, are likely to be held-back until E3, given that chief competitor Sony Computer Entertainment have not announced this information for their PS4 console. Major Nelson also put an emphasis on the importance of E3, writing: “Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.”

Microsoft have recently faced criticism from fans over a rumoured “always-online” requirement for the new console, which may also block used-game sales. The conversation was re-ignited when Adam Orth, a game director at Microsoft Game Studios, had a public dispute over twitter about such features, simply telling users to “#dealwithit”. Adam Orth has since left the company. Microsoft have neither confirmed nor denied any functionality of the new console.
