At the conclusion to today’s Nintendo Direct live video feed, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Amie revealed the new game in the Zelda series, which sports 3D graphics from a traditional birds-eye perspective. There is currently no confirmed title for the adventure, though it will be released “this holiday season” on Nintendo 3DS.
Reggie Fils-Amie said: “What our developers want to achieve in this new Zelda game is to re-invegorate the flat, 2D world of A Link to the Past with a sense of height and volume using the three-dimensional display of the Nintendo 3DS.”
Information otherwise is scarce, though we were told the title would feature a brand-new storyline and different dungeons. One interesting gameplay mechanic allows series protagonist Link to morph into drawings, giving players new ways to navigate the environment. A video of the first footage is embedded below, with a 3D video due on the Nintendo eShop soon.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. A classic mix of open-world exploration and linear dungeon-solving made it a hit with gamers and reviewers alike, and it effectively acted as the template for 1998’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, critically the highest-rate title of all time.
