Age of Empires II HD Edition Coming to Steam

Microsoft today announced that Age of Empires II HD Edition – an update of the fan-favourite RTS original from 1999 – will be released exclusively on Steam on 9th April this year.

The new version will feature a bevvy of enhancements, including an updated graphics engine with 1080p visuals and multi-monitor support, as well as full Steamworks integration, allowing Steam-based matchmaking and achievements. Crucially, the re-built engine now has full Steam Workshop functionality, allowing users to easily add to the game’s content. Additionally, all of the campaigns from the original expansion, Age of Empires II: The Conquerors, will be available for free in the HD Edition.

The update is being handled by Hidden Path Entertainment, who most recently had success with Counter Strike: Global Offensive, a new take on the Counter Strike franchise. Those who pre-order the game on Steam now will be entitled to a 10% discount, as well as early-bird access starting on 5th April.

Microsoft also released a trailer highlighting the new features, embedded below.
