Smells Like Team Spirit

Team: a group of people or animals linked in a common purpose. As you may have noticed, Ready Up is comprised of quite a few lovely animals people. We are a team. I even quite like saying the word ‘team’.

Team. Team. Team. Team. Team.

Less than three.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has an excellent multiplayer mode and as a result it currently still holds the throne as my favourite multiplayer game. The multiplayer is so focused on team-based play that anyone silly enough to try and go solo will soon find themselves becoming regularly acquainted with the Grim Reaper.

Even the mightiest of snipers can be inconvenienced by some of the rather unfortunate side effects of death. You’d be right in thinking that a medic could revive you easily enough. But that medic doesn’t exist – you’re not in a team. Now you need to run back to your sniper spot to die again or find a new one. Bet you wish you a had a team now, huh?

Well sometimes I wish I had a better team. Generally speaking, I have three very specific people that I prefer to play Bad Company 2 with because they understand the game. They understand the simple concept of an objective in a way that many human beings, that also play, do not. They understand that a close relationship to your objectives combined with an even closer relationship to your team equals win.

This is how you win.

Why do I occasionally wish for a better team? Generally speaking, many human beings do not understand the game. They do not understand the simple concept of an objective in a way that three very specific people, that also play, do. They do not understand that a close relationship to your objectives combined with an even closer relationship to your team equals win.

It was my assumption that when you buy a game you learn how to play it. In the case of Bad Company 2 it just doesn’t seem to apply to some people. Objectives will be screaming for assistance and no-one will go rushing. Twelve people in a team and everyone just seems to expect someone else to get it. That’s how it starts and also how it ends. First, it’s just one objective to be ignored but before you know it you’re all scrabbling to defend the last objective because no-one cared about the 7 before it.

It's all fun and games until someone loses A.

In fairness, plenty of people will be new to the game as new players will be joining all the time. These players have an excuse; after all, we’ve all been n00bs at some point. It’s the people who know how to play and know what to do but instead just ignore what is required of them and focus on other, less important things. Your kill to death ratio counts for squat if you haven’t won any games.

Oh man, I love Bad Company 2!

    Amen to that, brother!

Must play some more Battlefield, it’s a tremendous game, but as you say, a lot better as a team.

We really need to hit up some co-op again, Tony. We should maybe get in a few games before the triple-whammy of October releases are…uh…released.

I’d be up for that. I’ve not bought the game as I thought I’d missed the boat but if there’s still demand out there, tip me the nod.

Admittedly, I’ve barely looked at it since Reach came out. But there’s an expansion out at the end of the year for BC2 that will probably send me running back. 😀

It’s a great game, no doubt.
