Wanted: Game that is attractive, GSOH & a little different!

When you’ve been gaming as long as I have you reach the stage where you can pick up any game in a genre you have already played and just jump straight in. This is great, in some respects. I love that any shooter or RPG or even action game is instantly playable to me as long as I pick up the couple of extra twists. However, this does mean that overall I have probably played too many games in my life. Is there such a thing as too many games? Well yes, because you start looking for more than some can offer.

I’ve recently finished The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks on the DS and although I have always loved the Zelda games I found it very disappointing. There was simply no challenge in it for me, and that was without me collecting extra hearts from side quests. It got me thinking about what I want in a game and these days, it seems to be the oddball games that are appearing that provide a new challenge.

Obviously I still want pristine graphics but something with a kooky sense of humour seems to be the way forward for me. First, there was Eledees on the Wii. Thoroughly crazy and the most fun I have had on my Wii, the room trashing action puzzle game was right up my street. I thoroughly enjoyed Fairytale Fights, despite the many glitches, as the dark fairytale angle appealed strongly to my dark sense of humour. Having played it to death I needed something else. I love the LEGO games but even they are starting to blend in to an easy genre of games to thrash through. So, what do I play now? Well, it has to be Naughty Bear. Despite mixed reviews I have been desperate to play this game as it is again, darkly humorous with something new. I’m sure many features are similar to other games but the main character isn’t a well-muscled man or a busty heroine (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) it’s a psychotic teddy bear. So does this fit my criteria to keep me entertained? Definitely sounds like it, and with it on it’s way now I am thoroughly looking forward to having a fresh challenge of massacring teddy bears this weekend!

I can’t be alone in this train of thought and I am looking forward to seeing what game developers can come up with next. Kinectimals is definitely high on my list, but what’s next? A FPS where you play an animal lover shooting carrots at rabbits? A RPG in which the characters are all frogs of the Budweiser variety? A Black Books point and click? Actually that sounds awesome! Whatever comes next, you can be sure I’ll be on the look out. Anything a little innovative that tickles me just right and I’ll be there like a shot.
