The announcements came fast and thick throughout the conference, with Yoshi’s New Island confirmed for the Nintendo 3DS in Spring of next year; Super Mario Galaxy alumni Rosalina and Luma revealed as new brawlers in Super Smash Bros. U; and 3DS visual novel/puzzler Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney dated for a European release of 28th March.
Many of these announcements were accompanied by trailers now hosted on the Nintendo UK YouTube Channel.
We also received more information about Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on the Wii U, the sequel to Retro Studios’ take on the Donkey Kong Country series. Due on 21st February in Europe, the title will now feature original trouble-maker Cranky Kong, who takes advantage of a Scrooge McDuck-like pogo-stick jump ability. Encouragingly, the game will also feature a soundtrack by original Rareware composer David Wise.
One of the most surprising announcements of the day was the reveal of Hyrule Warriors (tentative title), a collaborative Wii U project between Nintendo and Tecmo Koei. Combining elements of the Zelda franchise with Dynasty Warriors, an early trailer (embedded below) featured Link facing off against armies of Moblins, Lizalfos and Dodongos with his trusty Master Sword and a pile of bombs.
The surprises continued throughout the conference, as Nintendo later announced their own ROM-hack-inspired title for the Wii U, NES Remix. Featuring snippets of 16 NES classics, the game asks players to complete a series of tricky (and sometimes bizarre) objectives with limited lives and on a time-limit. A trailer (again, embedded below) highlighted some of the challenges, such as running through the Mushroom Kingdom of Super Mario Bros. 1 while plunged in darkness. Retro fans will be pleased to learn that NES Remix is available right now on the European eShop for £8.99.
Finally, Nintendo confirmed that their “Year of Luigi” will continue on into 2014, with the release of Dr. Luigi on the eShop on 15th January, priced at £13.49 and complete with an online battle mode.
