Valve’s latest announcement: The Steam Controller

Last week was pretty busy for Valve, the company had three announcements to give us a taste of their plan to expand the Steam Universe. The week started with the reveal of SteamOS, Valve’s very own standalone Linux-based OS followed by the news of new hardware, the Steam Machines and their prototype boxes. The last announcement came on Friday, it is “a new way to play your entire Steam library from the sofa“, the Steam Controller.

According to Valve, the new, “different kind of gamepad“, has “a singular goal: bring the Steam experience, in its entirety, into the living-room” and the controller was what they called their “biggest missing link“, as they already had the user interface and “knew how to build a machine and even an operating system”.

The Steam Controller should bridge the gap between a mouse and an analogue stick with its dual trackpads, allowing gamers to play older, current and future Steam games including “the ones which were not built with controller support“. Valve promises that “RTS games. Casual, cursor-driven games. Strategy games. 4x space exploration games. A huge variety of indie games. Simulation titles. And of course, Euro Truck Simulator 2.” will all become available to play with a Steam Controller, in your living room.
