Agito Title Recycled for Free to Play Final Fantasy

Way back when the Fabula Nova Crystallis was a thing, Final Fantasy XIII had three separate standalone entries. Final Fantasy XIII itself was released as Final Fantasy XIII, that piece of history is obvious. Final Fantasy Versus XIII was teased, disappeared, teased again, disappeared again, then was rumoured to become FF XV, and then was only just recently announced to actually be FF XV, that piece of history is convoluted. But there was an oft forgotten third entry to the Fabula trilogy – Final Fantasy Agito XIII.

Agito XIII was actually released, though retitled as Final Fantasy Type-0 and only in Japan. So the Versus and Agito titles seemed destined to be relegated to simple working titles. Until Now! Huzzah! Final Fantasy Agito has now been announced as a mobile free to play title on Android and iOS devices, and will be a branching ‘solo’ and ‘team-play’ story set within the type-0 universe and featuring the same cast of characters. Solo sections follow individual characters through situations, while the entire cast comes together in team play sections to tackle the boss fights.

The free to play comes in the form of items and customisation for the player character, which sounds like the game will in fact be free to play, rather than pay to win. We can hope. Speaking of hoping, the bad news is that so far only a Japanese launch has been announced, but who knows, maybe we’ll see it released over here. And while I’m dreaming, I can dream of a ‘complete’ collection compiling it and the original Type-0, akin to the PSP’s Final Fantasy IV Complete. That would be, if you’ll forgive me a pan, a fantasy.
