One of the key moments during the E3 Nintendo Direct video – broadcast yesterday to coincide with the main show – was the announcement that Mega Man would be joining the Super Smash Bros. roster in the next game in the franchise, Super Smash Bros. Wii U.
The blue bomber will take advantage of the powers obtained from the evil Robot Masters, such as Metal Man’s Metal Blade attack, or Wood Man’s Leaf Shield.
Other surprising newcomers will be joining the legendary Capcom mascot, too. The “Villager” player character from the recently-released Animal Crossing: New Leaf will make an appearance, utilising his shovel, watering can and other gardening tools offensively. Even more bizarrely, the Wii Fit Trainer will also be entering the fray, using her cardiovascular techniques as attacks.
For the first time since the franchise began, the game will be released on a portable console, with a dedicated Nintendo 3DS iteration complementing the console game. The 3DS version will not only feature cel-shaded graphics, but its own set of levels based on popular handheld franchises, making it a must-have for die-hard Smash players.
Fans are hoping that we will see the return of the Smash Bros. Dojo, a blog which ran from 2006 through 2008 and offered an insider-perspective on the development of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii. In the meantime, Nintendo have set up an official Super Smash Bros. Wii U & 3DS website with media from E3.
Super Smash Bros on the Wii U and 3DS is scheduled for sometime in 2014. More information can be found in the Nintendo Developer Direct video, embedded below.
