Diablo II players, following the recent 1.0.8 patch update, discovered an exploit that essentially gives out unlimited gold. Blizzard, who were quick to respond, have since fixed the exploit but have temporarily suspended Diablo III’s slightly controversial real-money Auction Houses.
Players found the exploit after the patch was released, which gave both the parties gold when a transaction was cancelled before it was completed. This lead to essentially unlimited gold for any player exploiting the bug, and caused the Diablo III Auction Houses to cease trading to avoid any further damage to the in-game economy.
A statement on the official Blizzard forums from Stephanie Johnson, Community Manager, said: “At this time (and after careful consideration), we’ve decided to not move forward with rolling back the servers. We feel that this is the best course of action given the nature of the dupe, how relatively few players used it, and the fact that its effects were fairly limited within the region.”
Adding also that: “We’ve been able to successfully identify players who duplicated gold by using this specific bug, and are focusing on these accounts to make corrections.
No news on when the real-money Auction Houses will return, and many Diablo III players on the forums are angry that Blizzard are not rolling back the servers as, they believe, it will cause irreparable damage to the currency.
