“As I picked myself up, all I could hear was the ceaseless drone of traffic. Life went on around me, but the explosion was to change my life forever” – George Stobbart
I recently treated myself to a free copy of Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror Remastered for my iPhone. A chance to have George Stobbart in my pocket again, yes please! And being free is always a nice bonus. I’m a lover of point and click games, so the Broken Sword series was a must for me. Sadly only the first two games have a place in my heart. The others didn’t seem as perfect, they were buggy and frustrating. My love for George and Nico nearly died, I was so upset with what had happened to the series. The cartoon animation added to the charm of the game with George’s wit and Nico’s snooping. A Broken Sword 5 is meant to be in the works, but sadly I may give it a miss. The games aren’t the same anymore.
I discovered Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars when I was in high school. A Playstation One magazine included a demo disk and Broken Sword was on there. I glanced briefly through the other games available and none got my attention, except an odd point and click game. I hadn’t played any point and click games since Monkey Island, so I had to have a peep. Intro seemed interesting; a crow, the Eiffel Tower, a cafe, blonde gent, a waitress, a clown (shudder), an old man, bomb blast! Wait a minute, bomb blast? What is going on here? I then become George Stobbart, an American on a vacation who has now stumbled into an adventure of murder, mystery and of course mayhem. Is there any other sort of adventure? Of course George isn’t alone in his fight for survival, we need a heroine, a woman who gets the job done and in this case that woman is Nico Collard. Nico is a French journalist who meets George just after the bomb blast at the cafe. Their lives are now changed forever.
That was back in 1996, time flies doesn’t it? Being able to experience the games again on my phone is a dream come true. So if you want a game to play whilst putting up with the family over the Christmas period, then grab Broken Sword for £2.99 or hopefully Broken Sword: Smoking Mirror may still be free. If not, it’s still worth that extra couple of quid.
