Being called Tony isn’t really up to much. There’s always a smart-arse who rhymes it with Pony or Bony or who “hilariously” spells it ending in an “i”. It’s not a name people associate with cool and hip people either. Off of the top of my head, here are a few famous Tonys, none of whom are exactly what you might call role models:
- Tony Smart (the idiot from Men Behaving Badly)
- Tony the Tiger (advertising a cereal that is not so grrrrreat for your teeth)
- Fat Tony from The Simpsons (he’s okay, but with my beer gut he’s not helped my cause much)
- Tony Curtis (very cool back then, but his time has passed)
- Tony Soprano (okay, so this guy is cool, but he is still a psychopath)
So you can imagine my delight when I saw a post here on the Ready Up forum entitled: “The Ballad of Gay Tony”. At first I thought that this could be some sort of evil rumour being spread around about me, perhaps claiming that I bat for the other team? Closer inspection revealed it to actually be fantastic news – it’s the title of the new Grand Theft Auto IV Xbox 360 downloadable content, available (as those crazy Americans say) this fall.
It seems a peculiar name for the DLC, especially as you don’t actually play as Gay Tony himself, but his assistant Luis Lopez. As fans of the series will remember, Gay Tony was a character who made very little impact on either the main game or the first pack of downloadable content, but it sounds like he’s going to be pretty damned important in this one.
Stepping away from the rundown buildings, gritty environments and biker beards seen in The Lost and Damned, the new expansion pack promises to show off the glitzy nightlife of Liberty City. In Rockstar’s words, the pack “injects Liberty City with an overdose of guns, glitz, and grime”. The logo for it certainly lives up to the name.
Of course, this being Rockstar, and this also only being the first time we’ve heard about this, there’s little else to go on. A logo, a couple of sentences, and that’s your lot. It’s enough. I can’t wait. Myself and the other Ready Up guys and gals who play GTA on Monday nights are hoping for some more interesting multiplayer modes, like the couple of corkers delivered with The Lost and Damned.
It’s going to be a long wait until Autumn, but I’m sure Rockstar will dole out more and more juicy morsels of information to tide me over until the release. I am quite impatient, though, so if you need me, I’ll be in the trees outside Rockstar’s offices spray-painting all the leaves red.
