After a fantastic array of games were released and keeping us all poor (yes, remember a time when you could choose to be poor!) throughout 2007-2008, the games-well started to dry up with people claiming they had nothing they were really looking forward to in 2009. Where were all the sequels to amazing games that we were promised? Bioshock, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed and Dead Rising just to name a few, were massive hits with sequels promised and until recently there was not even a whisper.
But now, as I’m sure you’ve noticed if you haven’t been hiding on a distant planet, the time has come – Dead Rising, Bioshock and Assassins Creed have all been releasing teasers for their sequels, with Bioshock 2 dominating most gaming magazines regardless of format this month too. It is an exciting time for all of us, unfortunately a time when we must also be patient as we all know that a teaser tends to mean 6+ months before any game hits the shelves, but it’s started.
Are there good games to look forward to in 2009? Most definitely, if only to see if the original hits can carry themselves smoothly into a captivating sequel. The ideas behind Bioshock 2 and Assassins Creed 2 make me wish they’d just hurry up and finish so I can get my dirty little paws (ok, clean littleish hands – no dirt allowed near the controllers!) on them. Both games (spoiler-free guarantee if you have been hiding) have shown such twists from the originals as far as story goes, with Bioshock potentially winning my most inventive sequel storyline award already. It’s a tricky line to walk if you’re going to release a sequel but I really think there will be little disappointment with these two titles. As for Dead Rising… well after so long since the original I can’t wait to get back into a room with hundreds of zombies in it. Now where’s my bowling ball? Oh ok, an electric guitar will do.
