You gotta give it to Infinity Ward and Treyarch, they have brought us two of the most amazing games ever created! Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: World at War. Treyarch has more than made up for the disappointing Call Of Duty 3 with COD:WAW, bringing us an almost flawless game that equally rivals the masterpiece that is Infinity Wards COD4. And quite rightly, if your gonna work on a game for over two years it had damn well better be awesome.
Apart from the obvious things such as the awesome graphics, captivating campaign gameplay and exciting and varied multi player there is one thing that COD:WAW opened my eyes to that I wasn’t expecting and that came from it’s use of extreme violence. I’m not gonna downplay the brutal graphic violence in COD:WAW cause I love gaming and want to defend it as a hobby as I usually do. This violence is meant to be there and it is in no way glamourised or gratuitous. Some of the most disturbing scenes come from actual WWII footage, human beings actually did these vile things to other human beings, our soldiers actually went through those horrific events so you could be here today using the internet, reading some womans epiphany on video game’s violence. If any game portrays WWII or any war as gentlemanly and sporting it’s one hell of a kick in the teeth to the young men who gave their lives for Queen and country and the Veterans who returned home as heroes but who would never be the same again after such a harrowing experience.
COD:WAW’s intense depiction of the events during the second world war has made me greatly appreciate the efforts of those that truly fought for our freedom. Maybe I’m just emotional and hormonal after giving birth to a beautiful but demanding baby boy but I’m glad I live in a world where we can learn from our mistakes without forgetting how we did so and I’m greatful to those people who sacrificed themselves so that I could be here today, suffering from sleep deprivation and covered in baby sick but alive and safe and happy.
WAW what is it good for? Absolutely everything!
