Will Halo Ever Follow In Mario’s Footsteps?

So the thought has been in my mind for quite some time, I mean, Halo is one big franchise. Boasting a huge fan-base and extortionate sales figures to rival many blockbuster movies. So in other words, Master Chief has become quite the starlet in today’s gaming world, but who else is the number one gaming character of all time? It’s Mario! Lovable Italian plumber Mario, has fairly been rattled about in his old age, having appeared in around 200 games since his creation!

What’s so similar about these characters then, I hear you ask? Well, apart from the fact that they’re multi-million selling names. They’re both flagship characters or company/console mascots. Mario is seen in one hell of a lot of Nintendo games, having earned his right to be over used due to the success of past games under his name. Master Chief, on the other hand, is less used. Yet in a current three games running by the Spartan, he’s made himself a name that is widely popular in the gaming world. So where the Halo franchise is now, is where the Super Mario franchise was all those years ago.

But the point of this post, is simply to state the fact that I think I would die if Bungie or Microsoft turned down the line that the Mario franchise did. Can you imagine Halo Kart? Halo Power Tennis? Halo Baseball? Halo Party 4? Halo Golf? Master Chief at the Olympic Games? Dance Dance Revolution Master Chief Mix? Yes, I think you’ve got the gist of it now..I know the first time I ever played a Mario game, I never expected it to turn to so many different genres. Racing, puzzles, sports etc. Can anyone honestly stick up their hand and say they did expect titles such as Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix, or Mario Golf?

Slapping an established face on something is an easy way to get cheap sales. I’m not so certain it’s a guarantee that the end result will be any good.

I really enjoyed the Super Mario games on GB (even Mario Golf!), but today I’m just sick of seeing his face everywhere. I’m suprised he wasn’t in Soul Calibur. Maybe we’ll see a LEGO Mario game. Crash Bandicoot seemed to be going down a similar line after CTR and Crash Bash or whatever it was.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Mario being in so many different games because he’s a hollow, boring character. But someone like Master Cheif with an actual story around him would look stupid in a racing game. Racing on Warthogs could be made brilliant fun, but for a pure/seamless/sensical/story relevent expereince? No.

Yeah, Halo Wars is a Real-time Strategy game. Supposedly there’s possibly going to be another Halo title announced..

I agree with Emily, I used to love the Mario games but have got so sick of seeing his mug everywhere, it’s getting too much. What next, Mario toilet roll? I wouldn’t be surprised though if they started to exploit other properties a little more, but I think Mario lends itself to this more because it is more colourful and they can market to kids with pester power.

I do hope we’ve not seen the last “true” Mario game just yet, that Nintendo do remember where they came from and the gamers that made them what they are today.

Mario is a brand now though, which explains why we see him everywhere that Nintendo is concerned, It ships games, merchandise, peripherals so from their point of view, may as well keep doing it, end of the day its more cash in their pockets.

There was talk a while ago about Rare wanted Banjo to become one of the Xbox’ mascots, whether anything will come of that will probably come down to how Nuts & Bolts is received later this year.

Sackboy would be a great mascot for the PS3, he’s family and casual friendly, while even the hardcore amongst us can’t help but go “ahhhhhh” when we see him dressed up as Kratos etc, early signs signal they will.

I can’t see a Solid Snake vs Sackboy Olympics 2012 though for some reason.

I’ve yet to play Brawl (with Snake at least), but I’d cry if they stuck Snake in some cash-in Olympics title or anything like that.
    I love Snake.
They cannot do this to him!

Mario has more charm and wit in his little finger than Master Chief has in his entire body.

And Mario is basically a two-dimension stereotype who is as dull as dishwater.

So that doesn’t bode well for Master Chief’s spin-off factor.

I was never a Nintendo child so Mario just doesnt do it for me, that might change when i eventually get a Wii but for me its has been and will always be Sonic.. Segas flagship lil fella
