Capcom Digital Collection

Due to the bundle style of the Capcom Digital Collection I have decided that rather than giving an overall impression of the pack that I would break the package down, game-by-game, with around a 100 word impression for each title included. With an overall impression still being available down below in the Summary section. So, in no particular order, let’s get started:

Final Fight: Double Impact – Hands down one of the very best in its genre, I personally think even better than River City Ransom. This one is a great one to kick off with as you get Magic Sword with this one as well! Both of the arcade classics have a new HD shine to bring them into 2012, Final Fight has a truly excellent drop in/drop out co-op mode when splitscreened, and there’s even an old school highscore leaderboard for true authenticity. Play this with a buddy, or with plenty of nostalgia lust running through you, and it’s a terrific side-scrolling ‘beat-everything-to-death-a-thon’.

1942: Joint Strike – If you’ve ever played any of the 1942 games then this is the definitive version to play. If not, 1942 is a top down WWII shooter which you should try, particiuarly the one included in this collection. It takes the best elements of the series, health meters, bombs, level ranking systems, and final boss bonuses, then puts them all into this piece of 1942 HD glory. The campaign is a little short, but for an arcade title with this much replayability that’s not a huge issue. It is an incredibly addictive game and probably my second favourite in the entire collection.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 – One of the newest titles in the collection but you don’t need nostalgia for this one because it’s great in its own right. Nathan Spencer (AKA: the dude with the mechanical arm) is back again for a side-scrolling action adventure game with platform puzzles, boss fights, and a lot of different arm attachments to enjoy. There’s a co-op option, which is always welcome, and there are even some Challenge Maps that are pretty freaking hard, man. Once you master the swinging ability though this game is basically an arcade Spiderman War Machine. How cool does that sound?

Flock! – First impression: Whoa, this game is good. Second impression: Oh my God, this game is so frustrating! Flock! (with the exclamation point) is a game about using a Flying Saucer to direct sheep into the Mothership for… reasons. The sheep are understandably very non-compliant though and normally end up taking a dive off nearby cliffs or running into obstacles along the way. There are 50 levels of screaming “NO GO THAT BLOODY WAY!” to look forward to, and there’s a level editor so you can torture other people as well. Oh! And co-op. I like the amount of co-op this review has.

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 – Here it is! My favourite title in the entire Capcom Digital Collection. It’s a top down spray-and-slay shooter, with up to 3 player co-op, and it is just satisfying as all Hell. Were this a standalone title I’d be a little bit more cautious about praising it, but as part of a bundle it’s damn good fun. There are a ton of weapons, vehicles, and specialisations to get to grips with, a highscore system just to add that extra competitive factor, and you get to shoot all the things. Loved it. Simple but effective and gets my gold star of the collection.

Rocketman: Axis of Evil (& ‘It Came From Uranus’ expansion) – I think we all know that I’m going to award this game with the ‘Best Title for an Expansion’ award, but the game isn’t half bad either. It’s about three quarters bad. Yes, sadly, this is the one game I didn’t get on with in the collection. It has some decent writing, and pretty graphics, but it’s another spray-and-slay but the way it’s presented everything is just a bit too much of a clusterfornication. You can’t see what’s coming from where and it’s very linear making bottlenecks frequent and headdesk worthy. A shame, but worth a try I suppose as it’s there.

Super Street Fighter II: Turbo HD Remix – It’s freaking Street Fighter! If you’ve already played it then you already either love it or hate it. If you haven’t played it, then chances are you don’t really have enough desire for this one to pay off. To keep it simple.

Super Puzzle Fighter II: Turbo HD Remix – This was an unexpected gem for me. I didn’t imagine a game called Super Puzzle Fighter II: Turbo HD Remix would appeal much to me, but it’s quite interesting. It’s from the Dreamcast era only with a new HD glimmer, turbo remix HD glimmer if you will, and it’s pretty darn good. Gets really damn difficult really quickly, but essentially it is Dr. Mario with a Street Fighter skin and a few extra power-ups and arcade modes. Also has a 4 player multiplayer mode, which I didn’t get a chance to try out but I’m certain that I would lose.
