After being in development for roughly three years, former IGF awards winner Nidhogg is now dated for release on 13th January on Steam.

The uniquely-titled Nidhogg (a reference to the dragon of Norse mythology) is a multiplayer dueling experience from designer┬áMark “Messof” Essen.

With its unique design aesthetic and brutal combat, it has made a big impression at indie trade shows over the last three years, winning a number of accolades, including the Independent Game Festival’s Grand Prize. Like other long-in-development indie games such as Fez, many were eagerly-anticipating a final release date for the game.

The celebrate the announcement, the developer also released a teaser trailer featuring gameplay from the release version of the game, embedded below. It highlights the minimalist visuals of the title, some killer combat (pun intended), an expanded single-player adventure and the numerous multiplayer options on offer, including online modes and tournament play.
