Space Invaders turns the grand age of 40 this year, and as part of the celebrations, Taito are bringing Space Invaders Extreme to Steam in February.
Originally released in 2008, Space Invaders Extreme has brilliant colours, pumping music and fast-paced action. It brought Space Invaders up to date with a big bang, with a flurry of power ups, satisfying score-breaking action and vibrant visuals. The Steam version promises greatly improved graphics and audio, if your ears, eyes and hands can keep up.
The Steam version adds a World Ranking System for Arcade Mode, so you can work towards some serious bragging rights. Just remember: instead of shooting where they are, you should shoot where they are going to be!
To add to the wave of action in 2018, Taito have also announced that the excellent rhythm action game Groove Coaster is also coming to Steam. I’m incredibly excited by this, as Groove Coaster is fantastic on mobile, even better in the arcades, and will definitely be a welcome addition to my Steam library.
In Groove Coaster, you are on the rails, and need to tap, swipe and more to the beat as you fly through colourful, light-based environments. It will be interesting to see how this works on PC with a controller or mouse/keyboard, and whether the Steam version will incorporate either extra tracks as DLC, or the capability to create and share maps/tracks with the community.
