I just want to play…

Community is a big thing, I get that. In fact it’s what we here at Ready Up are, a community of gamers talking about what we love and that’s cool!

But does ‘community’ have to be the underlying goal of every game that we buy? Battlefield 4’s campaign missions have been described by our very own Tony as ‘basically a long tutorial for the online game’. I’m being bombarded with entreatments to get involved with the struggle in Paris as part of the Assassins Creed: Unity experience. I was encouraged to provide ‘Forza Fuel’ for my chosen team in their push across Europe, and to ‘challenge my friends’ in pretty much every title I’ve bought recently.

But a lot of the time I just want to sit down, turn on the console, load up a game and play on my own and have a full, enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Is that too much to ask?

It would seem that the focus has moved towards user-generated content and shared experiences in all genres but there are some – such as the FPS – which are being pushed forward in vast numbers of titles, none of which I can take advantage of because of the dizziness, nausea and vomiting through the eyes which results.. but that’s another story.

The bottom line is I just want a good story to play through. Yes, my marker will always be Mass Effect, but I enjoyed Assassin’s Creed (not 3 though!), I enjoyed Tomb Raider – twice – and I enjoyed GTA all because there was a narrative that I could follow through, at my own pace and in my own time. No-one was relying on me to ‘be there’ and in turn I relied on no-one else either. I enjoy a bit on online fun as much as the next person, but I’m loathe to let it become a requirement in my gaming life.

So a hope goes out that, as this new generation of consoles moves into its second year (where did that go?) that we’ll see games with great stories, great characters, third-person view and solid solo gameplay. Is that too much to ask?

All I want is a decent solo campaign. Is that TOO much to ask?
