Movie to game adaptations have a bad reputation. Granted they’re never likely to be great (Spider-Man 2 being a glorious exception), but they’re can often be average and serviceable. Regardless, they tend to sell a lot. Recently, however, movie games seem to have been relegated to smartphones, and more often than not are free to play in some way. Somewhere out there, there will have been people hoping that EA’s acquisition of the Star Wars game license meant upcoming tie in games to the imminent trilogy. These people will have to look elsewhere though as EA have today announced that they have intentions to make videogame adaptations any time soon.
Frankly, this can only be a good thing. Given free reign over their storylines, the Star Wars games have had some great places to go. The Jedi Knight series, the desperately in need of a sequel Republic Commando, Knights of the Old Republic and so on have all be exemplary Star Wars games, and have in fact would have been great sci-fi games even without the branding, so it can be hoped that in the hands of EAs capable studios this trend will only continue.
If we don’t see some film inspired levels and DLC for Battlefront though I’ll be the first to eat my hat.
