Last week, Valve had promised that it will be making three announcements regarding its project to expand the Steam Universe, a countdown showing when the informations will be revealed has even been set up on a website. Today, the first announcement was made public, “Steam is coming to a new operating system“, SteamOS.
In a statement on the announcement website, Valve explains: “As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself. SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.”
Four new Steam features focused on the living room will be added:
– In-home Streaming will enable you to stream all your Windows and Mac games from your computer to your TV via SteamOS machine (which hasn’t been announced yet) using your home network.
– Valve stays rather vague about the Music, TV, Movies feature, only teasing “We’re working with many of the media services you know and love. Soon we will begin bringing them online, allowing you to access your favorite music and video with Steam and SteamOS.”
– Family Sharing will allow you and your family to play each other’s Steam games in turn. Your individual progress and Steam achievements will still be saved on your Steam cloud.
– Family Options will give more control to families, so everyone can have their own library and choose what games get seen by whom.
This new operating system will be completely free to download for users and freely licensable for manufacturers.
No release date was announced today there are still two more announcements to be made by Valve this week, perhaps we’ll get a release date then, along with a SteamOS machine reveal.
