Killer Instinct “world’s most generous demo” according to Creative Director

The Xbox One exclusive fighter which, theoretically, lets you play forever without spending a penny is not so much Free to Play as it is “the world’s most expensive demo” in Ken Lobb’s outlook.

Killer Instinct will be downloadable free of charge with a choice of two fighters after which gamers may purchase additional fighters at $5 each or drop $40 and get them all including future additions.

Lobb aimed for the big questions, asking, “What is free-to-play? It’s a thing you really can’t ever own at all. Day one, if you want to buy our game, buy it. You own it, there’s no grind for little coins that unlock things later. None of that.”

Bear in mind that if you look at this Lobb’s way Microsoft are giving you a demo that you can pay to unlock small parts of, the comments seem a little ill-advised.

This could simply be an attempt to estrange the game from the negative connotations the term ‘F2P’ has taken on these days, with the model being looked upon as a sort of plague on the industry by many.

Discussing this with a buddy recently. We agreed that you should be able to complete a game entirely (ideally all the achievements too) without spending any money for it to be “free-to-play”, otherwise it is, in our opinion, a feature limited demo.
