Incoming – August Plus

Welcome back to our feature where we aim to outline the new releases that that our readers might be interested in.

Yikes. Just look at that releases table below! Let’s dive right in, shall we? Papers, Please – a title where players take on the role of a customs officer in a fictional 80s bureaucracy – has been trending on Steam Greenlight for a long time now, and I’m looking forward to seeing if the final product is half as enchanting as its demo was when it appears later this week on 8th August.

But while I always try to highlight every title of note, I think Ben would literally kill me if I failed to mention the release of Tales of Xillia on PlayStation 3 on 9th August, especially after his excellent feature on the history of the franchise.

For the retro among you, we’ve also got two remakes to look forward to. First up is DuckTales: Remastered on the 13th August, a lovely-looking HD version of Capcom’s classic NES title, though Xbox owners will have to wait until September to try it. That’s okay, though, because on 21st August they will be the first to get Flashback, Ubisoft’s re-imagining of the beloved Amiga and Mega Drive game from 1992.

If you were one of the many who spent a weekend watching the EVO fighting game tournament match-ups recently, then you might want to check out the PC release of Skullgirls, which finally makes its way to the platform on 22nd August, complete with the promise of new characters after a very successful indiegogo campaign.

Of course, I can’t wrap up this edition of Incoming without talking about the heavy-hitters rounding out the month, such as the eagerly-awaited Saints Row IV, an alternate take on XCOM, and a new Splinter Cell, all hitting on 23rd August. Carly is sure to be pleased with the re-launch of Final Fantasy XIV on 27th August, and disgruntled Wii U owners (and everyone else!) can breath a sigh of relief as Rayman Legends finally sees the light of day on 30th August.

Finally, let’s not forget PlayStation Plus, which continues to rotate excellent titles out on a regular basis. Europeans get the stellar reboot of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and the utterly surreal Spec Ops: The Line, which certainly isn’t your standard third-person shooter. Meanwhile, the North American selection is a touch more eclectic, including indie-darlings Bit.Trip Presents Runner2 and Machinarium alongside bigger titles such as Hitman: Absolution.
