Creatures of Galena

Given my love of logic, structure and order it’s probably odd that I’ve never really been a Collectable Card Games fan. I can’t think of a reason why but they always just seemed like hard work. Simes was a Magic: The Gathering fan and would explain at great length and with no little depth of knowledge what the cards did and all about tapping and all of that stuff too but I have to admit it went past me.

Creatures of Galena is a digital CCG coming soon to your mobile platform which gives you a deck of cards and a simple set of guidelines to start with. The goal is to gain 20 victory points by playing your creatures up against your opponents. My deck was chosen from the Aqua-Reptilia set of creatures and I managed to win a couple of games with it after running through the simple tutorial process. Each creature has an attack and Resistance value and can be played in either an attack or resistance position. If you’ve no creatures in play then an attack can be made against your base which is a no-contest fight conferring instant VP to the attacker equal to the VP value on the top right of their card.

A bad deck draw and a missed attack round saw me lose this one.

The campaign mode sets you up against an escalating set of opponents but this too was part of the learning process and I have to admit to being drawn into the game, even though I was still a little foggy on some of the gameplay aspects like support cards.

I would imagine that there will be a significant online community for Creatures of Galena who will put together some monumentally powerful decks and I can see tournaments developing too. It’s pretty, the music is atmospheric, and the concept is easy to initially grasp and get into.

I like this one; he’s mean!

Am I a CCG convert? Not so far, but this has re-awakened a passing interest so who knows! If you do like CCG-type games, keep an eye out for Creatures of Galena. I think you’ll like it.
