Face to face with new XBOX controllers

Today at Microsoft’s panel at SDCC ’13, Creative Director Ken Lobb revealed what features we can expect from the XBOX One’s controllers.

A prominently discussed feature was the Kinect camera’s ability to facially recognise different users, allowing a game controller to recognise the person holding it. In turn, it can automatically switch to that person’s gamer profile. Rare’s new lead of technology, Nick Burton, spoke of how the Kinect can read the folds in your face, and even discern which finger is which at 3 metres, supposedly in case you’re with Sony and want to be sure that Kinect knows what you think of it. The Kinect will also be able to map faces and insert them into certain games.

Other features include the controller’s haptic and rumble motors, which can provide special feedback, such as tire traction and performance in games like Forza 5.
