It would appear that Deus Ex: The Fall will block use of all weapons if the iOS device you’re playing it on is jailbroken – even if the App is purchased legitimately through the official App Store for money.
Players who purchased the game legitimately, currently priced at £4.99, or acquired it illegally while using a jailbroken device are greeted with the message: “We are sorry but you can’t fire on jailbroken devices,” when attempting to use any of the game’s weapons.
Users have since been piling on the anger and frustration as this was never stated to paying customers prior to purchase, although Square Enix has since added a disclaimer in the App Store’s description: “Please be aware, the Deus Ex: The Fall play experience is currently restricted on jail broken devices. Do not purchase if you have voided your warranty and have Jail broken your device.”
Of course, as is tradition when such extreme DRM measures are taken, hackers have created a fix to remove this block already. Leading many to condemn the publisher for implementing this block in the first place which punished paying customers.
Deus Ex: The Fall is available now on iOS devices for £4.99. If you have a jailbroken device though, Square Enix have openly stated that they do not want you to purchase this game.
