The original version of Spelunky (still available as “Spelunky Classic” on the Mossmouth website) was developed by Derek Yu in GameMaker and released way back in 2009.
A charming concoction of retro cave-exploration and roguelike influences saw Spelunky labeled as a mix between games like La-Mulana or Digger T. Rock and Rogue. It was an instant hit on the GameMaker forums and its popularity caught the attention of Microsoft, resulting in a new Xbox Live Arcade version.
The XBLA port of Spelunky was released last year to critical acclaim. It dropped the pixel-art aesthetic of the original for a more cartoon-ish look, and also swapped out its chip-tune soundtrack for a more mellow-arrangement inspired by Amiga and Mega Drive beats.
Spelunky HD will likely contain all the enhancements of the updated port, including co-op multiplayer, achievements and multiple player characters to choose from.
Although Spelunky HD doesn’t have a firm release-date, it’s expected “this Summer” on PC (through Steam and GOG.com), as well as the PlayStation 3 and Vita.
