Call of Duty: Ghosts still uses the Quake 3 engine

Don’t come into CoD Ghosts expecting to have your mind blown by the sweet visuals, because this title will apparently not be coming at you from a new engine as claimed.  In fact it comes to you from a modified version of the former Call of Duty engine, which is a modified version of the Quake 3 engine.

Basically Call of Duty: Ghosts runs on a heavily modified version of the engine from a game that was released in 1999.  No fancy new engine for Call of Duty fans.

This revelation comes from an interview OPM conducted with Lead Animator, Zach Volker, who told OPM, “When we’re talking about a new engine we’re talking about upgrading significant systems within in that engine. We’re not talking about throwing it all away and saying we’re starting from the ground up…it’s impossible to develop a new engine from the ground up in a two year cycle”

Many gamers watching the Xbox One announcement were fairly let down by the visual quality of Call of Duty: Ghosts, and to many the news that there is no new engine won’t come as much of a surprise, but it’s important to remember that Call of Duty: Ghosts will also see release on current gen consoles.

It’s probably fair to say that having to hold back to accommodate the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be restricting CoD: Ghosts in the visuals department.

They’re still using something based on idTech 3? Good grief. It’s one of these iconic engines, but I thought it had long since been superseded by Unreal. It’s impressive what they’ve been able to do with it, though, and I imagine very little of the original code still remains.
