The legendary Mega Man composer will be joining Jake “Virt” Kaufman – whose past credits include the retro-charged Contra 4 and Double Dragon Neon – in producing music for the title.
Remarkably, it was revealed in a Reddit session that Yacht Club Games didn’t actively seek the assistance of Mrs. Matsumae. Reddit user nickwoz (of Yacht Club) said:
“She came to us!!! It was crazy, we got an email from the guys over at koopa soundworks ( koopa.tv ) asking if instead of money support, if they could just put us in touch with the legendary composer of the first Mega Man game! We immediately took him up on his offer! She’s very excited about working with us and Virt to make this soundtrack really fun!”
Shovel Knight is a 2D platformer, described by the developers as: “a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It’s a hot mashup of new and old that may remind you of Mega Man, Castlevania, or Dark Souls!”
It has been a big success on Kickstarter, exceeding more than twice its initial funding goal of $75,000. The extra capital has allowed the funding drive to reach new stretch goals which will promise the implementation of additional features, such as a music player, achievements, New Game+ and a “gender-swap” mode.
There are still three days left to get involved with the Shovel Knight Kickstarter if you are interested. A pledge of $10 will entitle backers to a Steam key of the final game, while a $15 pledge will allow backers to optionally choose a Nintendo 3DS or Wii U version. No formal release date has been announced, though a version is estimated for September this year.
