Following THQ’s bankruptcy, 2K has stepped in and purchased the publishing rights to the popular WWE games, and are rebranding under 2K Sports. The next WWE game will be rebranded as ‘WWE 2K14’ to bring it into line with other 2K Sports franchises. WWE 2K14 will continue to be developed by Yukes – with Visual Concepts being brought in to assist the veteran WWE developer.
“We looked at a lot of different leaders in the industry and talked to all of the big guys, and for us, we had been with THQ for so many years, it was nice to finally go out and date a few other companies and see what kind of thought process they had about the video game industry going forward” said WWE executive VP of consumer products Casey Collins.
2K still wants to bring “some of the key designers behind the WWE gaming franchise” over from THQ. Collins stated “the THQ Fight Team is also being brought over, and they’ll report directly to Visual Concepts.” This news will be of great comfort to loyal fans of the series that feared for the franchise’s future after THQ’s collapse. WWE 2K14 is scheduled to release in Autumn this year.
