Another wave of zombie action is heading our way from Capcom in the form of Resident Evil 6 multiplayer DLC. Three new multiplayer modes, Survivors, Predator and Onslaught, are going to be added and Ready Up have already been hands on with them all.
First up was Survivors mode in which 2-6 players can play in teams or individually taking on each other and zombies. If you do unfortunately bite the bullet or get your head eaten off by a zombie then you respawn as an enemy character yourself. In order to become a human again you will need to kill one of the remaining humans on the map. The winner of the game is the person or team who are the last to still be in their human form. As a zombie you have various attacks including being able to spit acid, they are quite slow when walking but they can also run…hilariously! This mode is worth buying just for the joy of seeing a zombie run past you like a Benny Hill extra.
Predator mode is also available for 2-6 players with one of you playing as the Ustanak, the B.O.W. from the single player campaign which stalks Jake Muller. The remaining players are human and have to defeat the Ustanak or at least avoid being thrown about by it. You cannot be killed, but you do need reviving by another player in order to get back on your feet after an attack. Each round lasts 2 minutes and there are weapons available for both human and Ustanak, though the opposing team can also destroy these if they get to them first. The Ustanak has assistance in the form of the Oko, a butterfly that highlights the location of any humans in its vicinity. The Oko can also be killed, providing the humans with cover, though it does respawn. The game ends after each of the players has played a round as the Ustanak and all the points are added up on a leaderboard.
Lastly, Onslaught mode brings two players head to head on parallel maps. Each player has their own version of the map and faces waves of various enemies to kill, creating combo chains. Each combo is converted into an enemy and stored in a bar at the top of a screen, these enemies can then be dispatched to your opponents map at your choosing. Storing up a larger wave of enemies can overwhelm and defeat your opponent, winning you the game. This is made even more difficult by the reduced amount of ammo and health both in your inventory when you start and dotted around the map. Some of the enemies will drop some ammo, but not all of them, and you will still need to stop to pick it up so timing can be very important.
Survivors mode is certainly the one that offers the longest rounds, especially when played as individuals with six players. The usual ‘revenge’ style killings abound and the alternation between being a human or an enemy adds variety and stops the monotony sometimes caused by dying and respawning a lot in a game.
For quick games against a friend, Onslaught mode is the DLC to reach for. The games are rarely very long and a lot of fun can be had listening to your opponent screaming as the wave you just sent over hits them. It is easy to become overwhelmed in this mode and you will need a good knowledge of hand to hand combat, or running away, in order to escape a wave as it’s a little too easy to run out of ammo. Certain elements in the environment, such as barrels, can be useful and these add a learning curve to Onslaught mode which increases its re-playability.
Predator was certainly the mode we had most fun with though as the Ustanak or as a human. Tearing round as the Ustanak with its extending arm and bowling over players with the flying body of another simply doesn’t get old. That said, being human and working together to kill the almost invincible Ustanak is also fun and feels like an achievement.
The new multiplayer DLC is currently only available for Xbox 360 from December 18th and will cost 320 Microsoft Points each, or 720 as a bundle.
