Halloween Gaming

Like last year, chances are I will be stuck at home this Halloween. But I’m not complaining. Not only will I be shooting my water pistol at passing children (try it before you call me evil, it’s fun!) but I will also be playing some spooky computer games. I don’t own many horror games as I’m a scaredy cat, so this is my list. Let us know what you’ll be playing if you’re not out trick or treating! Here’s a few on my list to get me into the fright night mood:

Costume Quest:
This little gem was developed by Brütal Legend and Psychonauts team, Double Fine Productions. I managed to win a code for the Xbox Live Arcade version and recently downloaded it for free via the PlayStation Network. You play as either Reynold or Wren who are twin brother and sister. You need to save your sibling on Halloween night from monsters and get some trick or treating done in the process. But make sure you’re home before curfew! Cute graphics, funny dialogue and a treat to play!

Awww, siblings!

Alan Wake:
I purchased Alan Wake on its release date and still need to complete it! The game makes you jump and press the pause button a lot. Or is that just me? Remedy have been able to terrify me into hiding behind cushions when playing as troubled author Alan Wake as I help him search for his kidnapped wife in the small town of Bright Falls. Dodging flying cars, mad villagers with guns and swarms of angry crows, Alan Wake is certainly one to play in the dark with a pair of Turtle Beach headphones. Just try not to scream too loud!

Never, ever, piss off an author!

Catherine:
Okay, I know it’s not hard core horror. But the game is pretty damn freaky. You play as Vincent who is torn between his lover of five years, Katherine and the stunning Catherine, a young woman who Vincent cheats with. Every night you experience nightmares and you have to survive them or… you die! Each nightmare is different, but the goal is always the same; climb or die. If I were Vincent, I would leave the pair of them and be happy being single! Beats having marriage talks and nightmares every night.

Are we really that bad?

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut
I’m going back to the year 1997, one year after zombie fest Resident Evil was released. You cannot have Halloween without at least one zombie game and I’m going back to the beginning. Back to the corny dialogue, shocking controls and block graphics. Running round in that mansion needs to be done on the spookiest night of the year. If you haven’t experienced a Resident Evil game yet, then this is the one for you. See where it all began with Chris, Jill, Barry and Wesker. Pretend the films don’t exist yet and you know nothing!

Nomnomnomnomnom! Sorry, couldn't resist!

Well, so far that’s my list. I may add one or two more on the night, but for now that’s enough bumps and jumps in the night for me. I hope this has inspired some gamers to make their own Halloween list. If not, have fun and stay safe. And “Stay on the road. Keep clear of the moors!” Ahem, look it up if you don’t get it…

Only thing that went "bump" was his head!

I’ll be trying to finish Amnesia on Halloween, but it terrifies me too much that I might play it for five minutes, hear a creaking floor board, then off the game and uninstall it from Steam.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories on Wii is just about as scary as games get. You are basically completely unarmed throughout, and being helpless is much worse than facing bigger and badder enemies but having the means to dispose of them. This is where Alan Wake falls apart, as it starts absolutely pants-fillingly nasty, but soon turns into another standard horror shooter. The SURVIVAL aspect of Survival Horror is the one that devs should be focusing on.
