Most games are now supporting online multiplayer, but is it getting out of hand? In this day and age of wi-fi and internet highways not everyone is connected up. Some may not be able to afford internet access or live with parents/grandparents who have not accepted this witchcraft technology. My home has only been connected to the world wide web for two years and it was such a battle trying to convince my grandfather internet viruses weren’t catching and Big Brother wasn’t watching through the computer screen. So sadly not all gamers can experience 100% of a game if part of it happens online. Also all those achievements that go unlocked because they lack an internet connection. It seems so unfair.
Having online multi-player in some games can be fun, like Assassins Creed: Brotherhood for example. This game has brought me some laughs, screams and the occasional swear word. Usually I’m the one doing the swearing! The concept of being an assassin and being stalked yourself had great potential and being able to kill in a variety of different ways depending on your chosen character made it more appealing. But it doesn’t always work. Bioshock 2 and Dead Space 2 spring to mind. The reason why is because, to me, they seemed pointless. I heard Dead Space 2 seemed short and fans believed this was due to the multiplayer; the developers had spent more time creating that than making the game longer. Bioshock 2 had a good story for a sequel, so why did they think it needed multiplayer? 2K Marin seems to have jumped onto the multiplayer band wagon.
Of course there are games out there that are purely made for online experience, such as Halo Reach, the Left 4 Dead series and Call of Duty: Black Ops, just to name a few. These games do have storylines, but the main driving force is the multiplayer, so gamers know single player modes are going to be short and sweet and most of the fun happens online.
Lately PlayStation 3 owners have been going crazy for the Uncharted 3 beta that launched two weeks ago. I managed to download the beta and after playing it for only a couple of hours, I started to get bored. It’s only a beta, a test drive if you will, and it was free for me to experience, but I wasn’t pulled into it. I wanted to play the game, I wanted a storyline. But that’s just me. So far I’ve read nothing but good things from Uncharted fans, so lets see if people enjoy this version more then the last one.
