I recently decided to go back and play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and hope to get it completed in time for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I’ve got until 11th November, but with the amount of other games I need to get through and Oblivion being as big as it is (especially the Game of the Year edition!) I need to get some serious gate closing done.
I didn’t start off playing the Elder Scrolls series from the start, far from it. If it was not a console game, then I rarely showed interest. The Sims, some good old point-and-click adventures (see Dean’s article on them here: The Renaissance Of The Point and Click Adventure) and World of Warcraft Online were the only ones I paid any attention to. I briefly played Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind many, many moons ago on my PC and I wasn’t bowled over and enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Being a turn based RPGer, I’m not a huge fan of action RPGs, but will make exceptions for some series, like Star Ocean Story. But it was recommended to me by another RPG player as a series to keep an eye on. It was several years later when I heard talk of one of the best RPGs created, it blended adventure and action together well, and the character creator tool was one of the best and detailed yet seen. And I’m a sucker for creating my own characters!
It was two years ago (yes, two!) that I picked up Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year edition and nope, I have not completed it. The reason? It’s so damn big! Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may take place two hundred years after Oblivion, so there is no rush for me to get it completed, but I feel like I must in order to do the series justice. I want to be able to dedicate my full attention to the game, so I’m trying to get some of the less detailed games out of the way. I thought I had all the time in the world because there was no news of another Elder Scrolls game on the horizon any time soon. But now, it’s 9 months away and 2011 is already a busy gaming year for me. With Dragon Age II (hope you pre-ordered through us to get the limited edition! I know I did) just three weeks away, I don’t know how I will cope. But where there’s a will, there is most certainly a way.
The next Elder Scrolls instalment has instilled so much excitement and anticipation into fans, it’s a shock that Bethesda Game Studios is waiting until the end of the year to release it. But I admit, the date is pretty spooky and has a dramatic effect to it. Fingers, legs and toes crossed there will be a limited edition released because I will be getting my name down for one of those. And for those who haven’t seen the trailer, or just wanna watch it again, here it is. Dragons, a dramatic score and hearing Max Von Sydow telling us what is to come does fire up the imagination.

“The Elder Scrolls told of their return,
“Their defeat was only a delay. From the time after Oblivion opened, the sons of Skyrim would spill their own blood.
But nobody wanted to believe…believe they even existed. And when the truth finally dawned, it dawned in fire.”
