The Golden Joysticks 2010

The Golden Joystick Awards is the world’s biggest videogame awards ceremony. This year is record breaking one with the most votes ever cast by the public in it’s 28 years at over 1.5 million. Ready Up were invited along to this year’s ceremony to witness the celebrations, commiserations, speeches and tears and find out what you voted the biggest and best titles of the year.  The most coveted of course is the ‘Ultimate Game of the Year’. Past winners include Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, Fallout 3 and Assassin’s Creed. Dan and I both have our favourites but we’re about to find out who takes home the Golden Joystick!

We’ve spent  the morning in the media room with the rest of the games press in discussion panels about the industry today, listening to PR’s rapping, sweary style on Def Jam Rapstar, playing with pimped out consoles and being led through Deus Ex: Human Revolution by the developers. Right now we’re watching the great Rich Hall do stand up in a hall the size of a football pitch to everyone  that ever made a videogame. The champagne is flowing and while everyone is laughing there is an undercurrent of nervousness as people smooth down their hair and adjust their ties and fancy dresses.

In case you missed our tweet-a-thon during the event, here are the winners:

So there we are. The ceremony flew by and was, as is often the case in the games industry, more a case of fitting an awards night into a party than the other way round. There were a few surprises though. There was audible surprise from the audience that Professor Layton came second to World of Goo and I personally thought that Dragon Age would have at least made the top three in the RPG of the year category. But of course the biggest shock came when Mass Effect 2 scooped Ultimate game from under the nose of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Once the trophies were collected the party started and went on long into the night. Ready Up were ecstatic to be there to meet up with old friends and rub shoulders with B list celebs! Can’t wait to do it all again next year!
