October. It is easily going to be both the greatest month for gaming in the entirety of 2010 and the worst. No other month so far will see quite as many high-quality titles as this one. From Enslaved: Odyssey to the West to Medal of Honor and from Fallout: New Vegas to Fable 3, we really are being spoiled.
And therein lies the rub. There are far too many games being released in October. Far too many that I want to play. For me, the biggest conflict is between Fallout: New Vegas and Fable 3 – two games that I desperately want to sink hours into and they’re released a week apart. I honestly don’t understand why these are being released with only a week between them – they’ll be in direct competition with one another.
I would have thought that such a close proximity would have caused each game to have its sales eaten into by the other game come the release days, because unless you’re super hyped up about both games like I am then you’re only going to get one or the other. Fallout fans won’t bother with Fable and Fable fans won’t bother with Fallout which is a real injustice to both games.
I remember being convinced by my cousin into buying Fallout 3. I wasn’t that interested in it because it looked really pointlessly violent but after leaving the Vault I was hooked. I had played Oblivion a few months earlier which made picking up the game for the first time fairly easy thanks to a similar feel. Now New Vegas is just around the corner and I’m itching to get my fix. I’ve hammered Fallout 3 and its many DLC packs and just can’t wait to dive back in.
Fable 2 lies conquered at the bottom of my games pile. 1350 Gamerscore rests triumphantly upon my achievement list. I don’t think I’ve touched Fable 2 since I finished all the achievements which is a real shame as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t care so much that many of Peter Molyneux’s promises weren’t delivered upon – I loved it for what it was.
Okay so I’m not obliged to buy both immediately nor am I obliged to play both immediately either. The problem is is that I want to play both of them. I’ve been waiting so long to get my grubby mitts on each one that I simply can’t bear to not be playing them when I have ample opportunity to do so. Patience may be a virtue, but it’s unfortunately not one that I have.
The worst part is I’m getting the collector’s editions of both games. Combined with Call of Duty: Black Ops next month it means I’ll be living in Skintville until my next payday but at least I’ll have three awesome games to play through!
