We Need a Hero

zq2Ask any lover of Sci-Fi, horror or general geekdom and you can guarantee they will all share a common trait – people they just love to hate. The Jokers, Darth Vaders and Albert Weskers of our worlds often make the game, film or TV show we love, and no exception to that rule is arguably one of the scariest people on television right now – Gabriel Gray aka Sylar from Heroes.

Not only is it a show that after 45 minutes of watching each episode makes me think ‘hey I might be able to manipulate time, or learn how to fly’ it often leaves me white knuckled when the twisted supervillain Sylar enters a scene. He has it all, a demented mind, the dark sinister glare of evil, and the ability to cut open your head with the point of a finger… damn!

However, as much as we can all relate to our love of the nastier characters, sometimes what makes them even more popular is their sudden turn to the good side; take Spike from Buffy for example, nearly every vampire loving female in the world had his poster pinned to the wall once he got a chip in his head and tried to be a good guy! It seems that recently Zachary Quinto, the actor behind Sylar, decided that enough was enough and instead of brain sucking abilities out of genetic mutants, opted to shoot at them in order to raise money for the many failing American Arcades; what a guy!

zq1US chewing gum company, Stride, have decided that gamers world wide should stand up and be counted to help put money back into the small arcade businesses that are struggling to get through the current financial situation. The concept is simple, log into the  Save The Arcades website and play their arcade style flash game Zapataur. Each score you rack up can then be donated to one of four sponsored arcades across the United States. At the end of the promotion the highest scoring arcade will receive a donation of $25,000 courtesy of Stride.

As part of the promotion for the game, good old Zachary decided to come out and join gamers by playing a few rounds at his local – Video West Arcade in Glendale, California. As well as helping to promote the cause, he also took in a few games of Marvel vs Capcom 2.

Unfortunately the planned Heroes game failed to get passed development stages, judging by the latest info I doubt this gaming Hero will let it slip through any fingers if the idea comes around again! It’s nice to see people campaigning for arcades. I’ve struggled to find any locally around here (by “local” I mean 1.5hr drive in any direction). Bournemouth used to have a big Segaworld I’d go to with other students but it closed down a while back. I thought I’d found one but it consisted of a tiny room, mainly filled with gambling slot machines and a couple of dance games. So good luck to them!

This is a great idea. More should be done to save what was a major cycle in the evolution of modern video games.

The Trocadero in London was a huge part of my childhood, and I still spend alot of time there today. Its sad to see how its dwindled over the years. And with the incoming hotel expansion, the arcade floor (funland) is going to be minimised down. 🙁

Hopefully something can be done. 🙂

p.s. I am getting that t-shirt that Sylar wears. Friken awesome.

He’s a nice man. He’s also Spock – at this rate the only way he could enamoured himself more with a geek like me is if he whipped out a lightsaber and took over the world, putting an arcade on every street.

If Spock says so, it’s only logical to comply! ;D
