Marvel Vs Capcom 2

In case you haven’t noticed let me tell you something. Fighting games, old and new, are back! We’ve had an influx of sequels and remakes over th past year or so and more recently Xbox Live Arcade has been the place to get them witht he most recent offing being the mighty Marvel Vs Capcom 2.

I guess the easiest way to describe MvC2 is to say that it is ‘turned up to 11’. Everything here is bigger, faster, stronger and crazier, it’s fair to say that you probably won’t have a clue what is going on for quite some time but stick at it and you’ll soon be tearing up the opposition with your chosen team of unlikely allies. At it’s core you have 3 on 3, single round fights with the aim being to batter your opponents team till they are all out of life while avoiding the same fate for yourself. Where things get complicated it that although you only control one of your team at a time you can switch between them more or less any time you want. In addition you have an assist button for each of of your team mates that are not currently active, this will bring them on screen to help out for a single move. On top of all this you can pull out crazy hyper moves, team hyper moves and chained hyper moves, literally filling the screen with all manner of flashing pixels and racking up huge combos.

It is said that a fighting game can live or die on this roster and this is one of the things that makes MvC2 a classic. You probably already guest but the roster is made up of heroes and villains from both the Capcom video game universe and the Marvel comics universe. The XBLA remake is fully unlocked so there is no need to unlock anything. this gives you a roster of 56 fighters to chose from. When you consider that each fighter as 3 different assist moves to choose from you will literally have over a million different team combinations to chose from! I change my team about once a day, I’ll settle on one soon I’m sure.

As is the trend with this style of remake Capcom have added online play thankfully choosing to mimic the excellent netcode and game setup from Street Fighter II HD Remix and all is working just fine in that department. Alas this is not a HD Remixed title and so we have the original graphics with some filters that do a fairly good job of masking the games age as well as a widescreen option that I found a little confusing as to preserve gameplay it keeps you away from the edges. Thankfully you can switch these graphical options on and off as you see fit, with my preference being the smooth filter and a standard 4:3 screen ratio.
