inFamous for 15 Minutes

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, if you want to test a man’s character give him power”

Over  the last few days I have been spending some time in the company of a man named Cole. When we met I was gonna watch the telly but the batteries were dead. Cole recharged them. There was some news on the telly, we needed to go out but we were on the roof, that’s a lot of stairs. Cole jumped off the roof, bloody show off.

I’ve been playing an early preview of Sony and Sucker Punch’s upcoming ‘shock-em-up’ inFamous and I’m here to say that once the full game launches, I expect my PS3 to be getting the hell played out of it. I’ve been playing a relatively short press demo, about 15 mins play start to end without sodding about. However, I did sod about for quite some time. As I inferred earlier, you start by testing out your lightning blasting powers on some batteries before jumping off the roof. Then we’re off, running deep into the city. Following your mate that looks a bit like Elvis, as apparently Cole’s powers blew up his mate’s gun when he held it and he needs to go collect a new one. A sneaky hint that you are unlikely to be using any guns in this game… interesting. It’s time for power #2, whereas before Cole was shooting lightning at things, he is now tasked with lifting a car off the ground (the gun is hiding under a car, duh!), so… lightning shock-wave? Yes please!

Better get back to the mission then, the TV report that started this adventure mentioned that a food package had been dropped in the town square to help us poor starving souls (did I mention the city is all wrecked up? No? Well it is). On the way I fancied climbing a building and let me tell you, that Cole fella must have gone to an evening class at the Assassins Guild in Masyaf – he can really shift it up a wall.

At the town square I shifted it up a monument and freed the trapped food packages with a handy bit of the old lightning, I get ready to jump to the pavement ready to be praised by the crowds for my efforts. What’s that? A gang of Reapers are coming? I wonder if you can kill people with these lighting shots… okay, they’re all dead now.

End of demo? Not quite. I was left with a choice: let the starving crowds help themselves to some food or attack them and scare them all way keeping the food for me and my friends. I see where this is going. I let them have the food, the demo restarted and I played it all again.

Where did this game come from? I remember hearing a little about it but it’s due out in less than two weeks. In summary, it’s a bit of Crackdown, a slice of Assassins Creed, a touch of The Force Unleashed… and I can’t wait!

I’ve been looking forward to this for a while, and now I’ve a few heard good things about it I can’t wait.

I’m also surprised that all of a sudden it’s out next Friday. Good news, though!

Now that the full review build is at RU towers, you don’t need to know this, but there were more levels on that demo build 😛 (You had to hold down buttons as it was loading up, silly I know!)

    Anyhoo, awesome game!

I had heard of this but hadn’t been reading much about it, or had any inkling as to when it was out. Knowing that this is out shortly, I think it might be good not to know release dates too far ahead.

And I liked all the games that you compared this to in the last sentence. It’s been a while since I played anything on the PS3, must remember to charge the controller.

Ohh, it looks good, doesn’t it? 😀

    Reminds me a bit of (much-loved) Psi-Ops.
Same feel of giving the player the tools and then letting them find the emergent gampelay.

But then maybe it’s just his shaved head. 😀

Ive always wanted to be a superhero, always looking for the game that I can esacpe in, to become one.

Infamous looks to set the choice and destiny of the user, so its not just a matter of stopping the bad guy, getting the girl and saving the world.

    But its your choice.

    Bring it.

I’ve known about this for a while and it seems to be almost a genre now, doesn’t it? But the release date is a surprise! Shame it’s only on PS3… for now.

Sucker Punch is a Sony-owned studio, so that’s where it’s going to stay.
