Come ahead if you think you’re hard enough!

This week, as I’m sure you’re all aware, marks a huge step forward for Ready Up as a collective.  On Saturday six of us are going to attempt to play Burnout Paradise for twenty four hours solid under the watchful eyes of official Guinness World Record adjudicators.

We will have to abide by their strict rules and regulations regarding manner of play and breaks for eating, toilet or a walk outside. Being a close knit site, we will have a support team on hand to help us out staffed by more Ready Up team members, all of them giving up their free time and travelling many miles to watch and help us with our attempt.  It is also great to have such a strong showing from various family, friends and forum members, many of whom have never met us before.

No one is getting paid to do any of this, we are all doing this for the love of it and let’s not forget the most important part, all proceeds raised will be going to charity.  I’m very happy to tell you in a first announcement kind of way, that for those of you able to come along and see us during the attempt that we will be selling lots of games and game related items. Once again, all money raised will be going to our nominated charity, so dig deep for that one.  As it stands I am hugely excited by the event but at the same time I approach it with some trepidation, this is by no means a walk in the park, this is a test of mental strength, physical endurance and a will to win and of course a desire to not fail.

Everything is good, right?  With regards to the record, most definitely, but there is a dark side to all this that has me seething with venom-coated hate and anger.  As soon as we went public with our plans a very strange thing happened, and not just once, many times and it’s still happening over and over.  Out of the woodwork are coming all these people brimming with negativity, offering words of been there, done that wisdom, telling us how they could do what we are going to do and have indeed done it.

As soon as we had opened up the comments for our attempt we were filled with various messages of un-support, sadly to the extent that the comments have been closed.  Why, why, why are you people doing this?  Is it an esteem thing or are you genuinely jealous that some people are getting up off their arses and attempting to make a difference to others who may be less privileged than us?  Let’s not forget this point, and if you are one of the people who left us a nice comment please stop and think for a minute, we are doing this for a charity, not for personal gain.  Personally I would love to turn up, say hi and be home tucked up in bed by one a.m., but on this occasion some friends and myself are going to stay up for more than twenty four hours to raise some money.

Does any of that deserve any of the negativity we had put upon us?  I really don’t think so, so on this occasion I’m going to offer an olive branch to all you nay sayers, please come along and support us, donate some money to a really good cause and I will forget that any of the comments were even made.  If on the other hand, you still want to keep up your self-righteous ramblings, I offer you a dare.  Come along, stand in front of us and tell us why you are so much better than us and what we are doing. Please!  There, I’ve blown off some steam and can now see clearly, of course everyone is entitled to an opinion, but in this case please think first.

Anyway there are only a few more days to go now, the final preparations are in place and everything is coming together nicely.  If you can’t come along please still drop by our nominated charity and donate some money, if you know any of us personally fill out our sponsor forms or sponsor us online and wish us luck.  There is still the opportunity to join us on LIVE during the event and be able to say that you joined in during a world record being set.  If you do come along please don’t expect any long winded conversations from those of us playing, I’m sure you all understand why.  We will be more than happy to see you turn up and mingle with our friends, family, support team and forum members; if we can manage we’ll say a quick hello.

Please also remember that our break times will be precious to us, so if you see any of us take a break don’t accost us for anything, if we can manage we’ll come and see you.  There will be plenty of photo opportunities throughout the event and if you donate enough money I might re-enact my now famous “nakey with guitar hero pose” – in private of course!  We really look forward to your support and continued friendship, just remember:

At Ready Up We play games, and you’re damn well going to know about it.

Negativity unfortunately comes with notoriety and stuff like this will only help grow the notoriety of the site. Bottom line is ALL of the people who offered advice/claimed it was easy/claimed they did will it will never EVER do what you guys will do.

“If you do come along please don’t expect any long winded conversations from those of us playing, I’m sure you all understand why. ”

Sorry but I expect you to throw your pad down and spend your break bear hugging me. No excuses. 😉

You’ll hear it from me on the day but best of luck guys and make us proud.

I agree it’s going to be tough on participants. I know I couldn’t sit for that long in front of a screen (I get terrible eye strain). Really does sound harder than you’d think. That said, everyone better have their based bGaming Faces on for this photographer 😀

On my second attempt I beat my personal play time of 1hr on Burnout the other night, but my first attempt was pitiful, I got as far as the menu screen before I fell asleep.

24 hours of doing anything like this will be a massive mental and physical drain, having seen Kat and the rest of the frag dolls after their record breaking 24 hours in Vegas 2 at the i-series, I can tell you that it’s only for the hardcore.

I have to agree with the above statement (#5 by the way). I spent some time with the FDUK when they made they set that record on Vegas 2. That had to be such a drain on them. I hope they make it through and wish them the best of luck. My only regret is that I won’t be there on Live to play and cheer them on thanks to my 360 still being down.

Go for it guys….you will always get the armchair naysayers and sportsmen…the sort who slag Jimmy White off for missing that Black or puffing that they could do better than their favourite overpaid football player, or breeze through a 24 gaming marathon. It’s all crap…you and the team will actually be putting your time and money where your mouths are and doing it, so hat off to you all.

Best of luck to the team, sorry I can’t be there to support and buy stuff in person (I want gaming merch. :() – but I’ll jump into the attempt on Live.

    You can do it! <3

I think it depends vastly on the game how difficult a long stretch would be…

Anything on 360 (especially a racer) would be much harder than something on PC I think, partly because a mouse would be much much comfier to hold for a long long time.

I reckon Left 4 Dead on PC might be one of the easier things to do, as it’d keep you alert during play; and you have small natural breaks in saferooms… (and the aforementioned comfy mouse)

But a racer on 360!? Eep.. I can barely play Pure for 20 minutes before my hands hurt like hell 😐

Excellently put Martin… glad to see you’ve made it to Wednesday without exploding… only another few days to go!

Maybe try and get chatting to you guys over Live from Van’s place or maybe if I jump onto one of the over machines at the event, but I will have a digital camera, just to let everyone know. :p

‘if you donate enough money I might re-enact my now famous “nakey with guitar hero pose’

Kinda scared to part with my money now.

If I haven’t already said so, then best of luck everyone. I know it can be hard to keep motivated to playing one game for a long period.

I was going to bring some Haribo along too, but if you guys can’t eat it because of holding the joypads, maybe best to eat them myself. Muwahahaha!

Best of luck to all taking part.

Its a difficult, but hopefully fun, thing to do for a fantastic cause and if you have to see that as a negative then theres clearly something wrong with you.

Hopefully you guys will make an impact on the lives of some less well off. I may stop by if i get a chance and buy some gaming stuff!

Hey Martin, it’s a fact of life that the anonimity of the internet just attracts negative comments. Just put it this way, the people that matter, they are impressed. Both by the effort and the reason for doing it. We’ll be there, cheering you on.

Good luck for saturday. Me and Rook will be there, cheering you and the rest of the guys on.

You can count on my support on Saturday too, Martin. I’ll try and bring along some refreshments. 😉 Don’t listen to any of the detractors – you’re doing great work!
