Lady luck smites thee!
By Ben

Those of you that have the boring task of having me on your Xbox Live friends list will have seen lately that I’ve been particular taken to the quite excellent Civilization Revolution.

I’ve always been a fan of the Civilization series, way back when I was just a young lad and I spent my summer in the now nostalgic world of Civilization II. Times change though, and although I approached it with caution, in this case a console version of the game has worked.

This isn’t what I’m talking about today though, no; today is about part of the game, or any part of any game for that matter that is based around luck.

Why do developers insist on implementing aspects of games that are based on a value of what many believe to be an unknown entity? Call me old fashioned, but I’d much prefer the consequences of my actions to be in the hands of an algorithm or two.

I’m actually talking about the Great Leaders that appear in Civ: Revo, yes they all have certain prerequisites before appearing (usually technology based), but apart from that it’s random. I even scoured the vast knowledge of the internet using Google as my hyper-drive to power a ferocious search for knowledge and what I was hoping was that it would return glory.

My search failed, and it seems that I’m now forever doomed to spend an eternity awaiting the arrival of the so called Great person, Mr. Vasco da Gama, who by all accounts was quite an explorer back in the 1400s, I just wish he’d come explore my game some time.

Countless numbers of games played, my first full 1000Gs within touching distance and it seems that lady luck has totally forsaken me.

He’ll never come with that attitude…if Parappa the rapper taught us anything it’s that positive thought is often as important in achieving your goals as well timed button presses….or as he more eloquently put it “You gotta believe!”

I am also (or was) suffering at the hands of luck – namely playing Fable2 Pub Games. Fortune’s Tower jackpot is one thing but trying to get a ‘Big Win’ on bloody Spinnerbox is pure luck and makes for a very frustrating time, as does the Keystone jackpot achievement. I too, like things that depend largely upon my choices and actions and having to wait and endlessly press the A button while my eyes melt over my hundredth Spinnerbox game is pretty poor.

If only you could trade great people like Pokemon…

Fine and Dandy, Jake, until Team Rocket turn up to steal Einstein…
