Oops! I’m doing it again!

I never read, watch or play a book, movie or game more than once. I do know plenty of people who do but I cannot bring myself to do it. I do these things once and don’t want do to them again even if I really enjoy them, until now.

As I sit here with Vault-tec bobblehead looking at me I cannot decide if he is shaking his head, nodding in agreement or laughing at me playing through Fallout 3 again. I can’t help myself though, I’m like some sort of crazed up junkie. I played through the game, reached the end, thought there must have been some sort of mistake and even though I was in denial I eventually decided the best option would be to start again.

On starting again I found myself thinking about what type of character I would play, what would I make them look like and what would my goal be in the game this time? I was only level 14 when I completed the game the first time and I had hardly skimmed the surface. I did hardly any side missions, didn’t concentrate on what character skills I really wanted to improve, never made any new weapons from schematics and didn’t wander the beautiful wastelands in search of deathclaws and super mutant behemoths.

I know this appears to be turning into a post-review review and I don’t mean it to. I find the game so more-ish like a packet of Pringles and I cannot put it down, so much so my wife is away to another panto. Take from that what you will.

Back to the point!

During a time where there are so many good games that I should be playing, I am repeating my experience. Out goes the need for more games and gamer points because I have a new found appreciation for what developers and publishers are doing. A great deal of effort goes into the games we play but how often do you sit down and appreciate what they have done or what they are working on?

Bethesda have revealed that the first DLC pack, Operation Anchorage, will be available in January where they will bring new weapons, possible new perks and lots of Red Army to face. This will be followed by The Pitt which will be based in Pittsburgh and finally Broken Steel where there is talk of raising the level cap. Of course I will probably have sickened myself of the game by then.

It is weird when this happens. I’m halfway through Dead Space and Far Cry 2 at the moment.

Yet when I get home from work tonight I will be playing GTA IV on single-player, despite the fact that this will be the third time I’ve completed it (on two different consoles no less)

I will finish Dead Space and Far Cry 2, but at the moment I’m inexplicably drawn back to GTA.

I’m looking forward to getting stuck into this one over Christmas, though i need to finish off Fable 2 first as I’ve let my half finished games pile grow a little too high for my liking.

I’m exactly the same with Fallout 3 – it’s the first game in a long time that I felt the sudden urge to play through again straight away. I certainly didn’t feel that way about Oblivion……

Wait a sec? You never watch a movie twice? Or read a book twice? I’ve got to say….there a quite a few movies and books that are better the second, third, fourth etc. time you experience them.

Examples I can think of are the Hitchhikers books…the Die Hard movies….anything by David Lynch, David Cronenberg or Quentin Tarantino….although if you didn’t like those in the first place they aren’t relevant examples.

What about revisiting something you experienced years ago, and seeing how you react to it now that you’re older?
