Warhammer: My first steps
By Dan Bendon

Yeah, I know this is late… fate conspired against me and I was faced with four days without any access to my sexy laptop. So instead of posting on Monday I decided to wait till I’d got in some real play time. So let’s go over my first few days.

First I was faced with the tricky task of choosing a side, then a race, sex and finally a class. I went through a few before finding a setup I was happy with.

Choice one – Male High Elf Swordsmaster – I found this starting area too ‘elfy’, I know that sounds stupid but it reminded me too much of Lord of the Rings Online and I was looking for something new in WAR. So I scrapped him after about half an hour.

Choice two – Female Human Witch Hunter – This starting area was great: interesting quests, cool looking town. However from looking through the skills I would be using, I found the Witch Hunter class should probably be played like a WoW Rogue. Nothing wrong there but I just suck at playing like that, I end up playing it like a hunter and that is wrong. I’m not a rogue player. I’ve come to terms with it and have moved on. So on I moved.

Choice three – Male High Elf White Lion – This is a melee range fighter with a pet, a nice twist on the pet class. Unfortunately I was under the impression you started with your Lion, you don’t. NEXT!

At this point it was time for a cup of tea, when I returned with tea and MMO snacks I found that someone with a ‘thing’ for character creators had made me a…

Choice four – Female Dark Elf Witch – Surprisingly not a magic based class, they play as a melee DPS class, all about messing up your opponent with quick attacks and status effects. Like a rogue, without the sneaking. Hell yeah, that’ll do me! Also they wear very little in the way of clothes. Let me introduce you to Blink!

At this point I’ve reached rank (level) 9 and I’m having a great time, as with any new MMO I’ve had some issues, some quests aren’t as clear as they could be but I’ve been persevering and it’s paying off. To wrap up this entry I wanted to talk a little about two things that have really impressed me about WAR.

The War of WAR
You really get a feeing that you are playing your part in a war. NPCs battle all around you and you are free to leave them to it or jump into the fray. Playing as a Dark Elf there is a great feeling that you are invading the land of the High Elves. You fight a lot of humanoids in your early levels, in contrast to Warcraft’s early critter hunting quests. Mythic Studio have really captured the feel of the ongoing conflict, zones are changing control all the time and you are always being rewarded for your services to your cause.

Public Quests
Each section of each zone has its own public quest. It starts automatically and anyone can join in to cooperatively work towards that current objective, if the objective is met then it moves on to the next quest section. Get through all the sections and you are rewarded with a loot bag based on your contribution to the quest. Quests reset back to the beginning after a short time if a section is failed or if the whole quest is completed.  They are an excellent distraction from general questing and offer pretty good rewards for your time.

Well that’s all for now, two more levels and I’m on to Mastery training for my class, then I’m on to tactics and all sorts of awesome sounding stuff. I’ll check in with you again after this long weekend.

Nice write up Dan, this caught my eye a while back but I’ve not ventured far enough to buy it. For some reason the thought of a subscription puts me off.

Dude it’s all about the Warrior Priest, his bald head gives him magic healing powers! I’m glad your enjoying the game :)

Hi, what in the name of God is DPS?

    Too elfy? Heh.

Reminds me of Little Britain with the guy that wants a pirate memory game and then moans that it’s a bit too piratey…

I did wonder if I should explain DPS, it’s Damage Per Second, a DSP class is all about causing as much DPS as they can. In WAR and WoW weapons are measured by their DPS derived from their speed and hit damage.
