Comfort Zone

Me vs Horror films, they always get the better of me and creep me out for the next few nights. I end up losing sleep, switching on all the lights in the house, walking with my back against the wall, even up along the stairs so I can see above and below… yeah, I’m a total wimp. Then you know what gets worse than horror films? Horror games! I can’t even get through the Grudge Flash Game without the occasional yelp. Click at your own risk!

Playing scary games have a bigger horror effect and it’s all just from knowing you’re connected to the action with the control pad. When it comes to these games I become massively cautious, turning into the kind who goes running to the save point A LOT, even if it means going out of my way to track back through a long route to the last save point. Uh huh, that’s how bad it gets for me. Now when things start to freak me out, here’s my embarrassing truths as to how I deal with the tense atmosphere:

* Turning the volume down a bit.

* Pulling my hoodie up or if I’ve got a blanket I’ll wrap up like E.T. For some reason narrowing my field of vision is comforting.

* Making sure I’m sitting cross-legged or I feel my legs are exposed and I’m imagining a chill.

Seriously what do you guys do to cope with horrors?

Hehe and you ask why do I put up with it? Call me crazy but even if it’s gonna cost me some beauty sleep I really love the experience! Although my big rule is that I’ll only play them with a laid-back gamer. Or so it seems as anybody who’s accompanied me through game play never wants to take over when I ask them to. So which ones have gotten to me the most? Whew! No doubt about it, this one definitely did!

Project Zero is also known as Fatal Frame in some countries.

I feel Project Zero certainly accomplished making you feel like a fragile little puppy. It’s no Resident Evil or Silent Hill where you can pick up your guns, ammo or a nearby baseball bat.

All you have to fight back with is a holy camera… yeah it sounds silly that you’re taking pictures of ghosts to exorcise them but seriously it’s more terrifying than you think! The closer you let these freakish things come the more effective your attack will be.

Now how many of you would appreciate this horrible lady coming to about 5 inches away from your face?! Believe me when they come close they like to suddenly jump at you screeching! Truly horrific stuff!

Another nice touch that was in the game was when I reached quite a tense moment in the plot, left my character somewhere safe so I could go off and grab a drink before I’d face the next big scare scene. When I returned to the console the TV was blaring out static mixed with creepy whispers and this grudge-girl face was constantly fading in and out all over the game screen! AARRRG!

My second choice of top horror is the F.E.A.R series. Especially Extraction Point where the fear factor stepped up a notch so I recommend them! Admittedly they’re the typical FPS but you’d never expect such paranormal activities to be encountered in these games. F.E.A.R had me quivering in my gamer chair constantly and just for those who’ve played it too, here’s a lovely montage of scary moments from F.E.P on the usual youtube. Warning: Spoilers! Please don’t click it if you intend to play the game at some point. I hope it brings good memories to some as it did to me.

So I’ve felt that lately I’ve been missing some horror gaming. Anyone recommend a good one? The last game I completed was Obscure and I was quite happy with the two player experience. It pretty much reminds me of the film “Faculty” with the darned blue-eyed Elijah Wood. Not sure I’m feeling much for Obscure 2 though but I’m still working my way through it, perhaps it’ll pick up.

Now we all know that there’s the new wave of demand for co-op gaming throughout. Luckily we’ll be feasting on the adventurously stated 4 player co-op Left 4 Dead and Resident Evil 5. Shame they’re still looking to be co-op over online. Then for a different taste we’ve also got the upcoming Project Origin, Siren : Blood Curse and another Project Zero (w00t!) coming specifically to the Wii (does this mean we’ll see some stupid camera/lense accessory attachment to the wii-remote?). Oh but I’ll welcome more frightful gaming galore! When these arrive I’ll be booking time off work to play them, freak out, suffer baggy eyes, endure the paranoia and hopefully recover in time before I go back!

Nice selection of the Tarten Asia Extreme Label. Sadley it’s closed down now ๐Ÿ™ I was lucky to get the very rare Special Edition of Battle Royal when it first came out!

As for scary games I can’t play them without freaking the shit outta me. Not that this will stop me with Left for Dead and Resi 5.

Listen… I’m 6′ 2″ tall, the thick end of 16 stone in weight and my solution is simple, I don’t play them because they scare the bejeesus out of me!

The first resi game I attempted to play I switched off after the first zombie attack and I remember getting the **** scared out of me over ….erm Alien VS Predator. I was playing as the Marine to be fair and seeing the Aliens running over the walls at me….I turned it off before it got me and my heart was pounding. *ashamed* I vow to try and purchase a brass pair and re-try these things otherwise I’m missing out on so much…and if I don’t, I’ll never be able to play Dead Space when it hits the shops.

    Films? Don’t Look Now… so it’s not a straight-up horror.

Games? I don’t get scared by them; tense maybe, not terrified… except some bits of Condemned. I heard Resident Evil 5 won’t demand co-op, though I’ve no idea how good the AI ally is.

James (hearts) horror films and watches many of them… especially cheesy fun 80’s slasher films…

Cos hes a lunatic who talks about himself in the third person.

I used to be scared by the resi games but Resi 4?… eh… I didnt find that one scary at all.

Everyone loves a cheesy 80’s slasher; Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Home Alone; all guaranteed to get the blood pumping.

But if you really want to see me hide under the pillows, there’s few to beat The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Or anything with Chevy Chase in it.

It took me half an hour to get to the very first zombie in Resident Evil (remake, which granted is TERRIFYING), even though I’d been given the grace to make my first attempt through the game with an Action Replay for infinite health/bullets/saves. I couldn’t force myself to continue, I was shaking so badly. Not because of that single zombie, but for fear of what awaited me beyond each corner, behind each door.

It’s been a few years now, and I still haven’t played any of the Resident Evil games. Not even Deadly Silence on the DS, despite my best attempts. It’s beginning to be a little bit frustrating, as surely the less-impressive graphics shouldn’t be so terrifying. REmake I can excuse, but being physically incapable of playing through RE2 or 3? Code Veronica, my favorite in the series? Pshaw! Unheard of.

I guess it’s just the atmosphere. I was drawn to Resident Evil by the depth of the story (which I do realize has gotten extremely convoluted; so much so that “hard core” gamers often laugh at me with the response “what story?”) and as a result I get extremely absorbed by them. Doesn’t do well for my fragile psyche, and I’m left imagining moans and moving shadows in the dark for weeks afterward. I’m determined to play through them eventually, though lots of self-berating for being so scared hasn’t helped in all this time.

…I suppose this lengthy comment’s point is simply to say thank you. If you can find a way to get through games such as these, surely I can. It may take some adjusting to shift my mindset from “I won’t be scared” to “it’s alright to be scared”, but eventually I know I’ll find a way. ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m a very jumpy person. I don’t mind horror, but when something jumps out it makes me jump, and I occasionally have jumped so hard that I very nearly pulled a muscle.

It doesn’t even have to be horror, just a sudden loud noise. My friend nearly p*ssed herself laughing at me when we sent to see Kill Bill and I practically hit the ceiling when the gunshot at the start went off.
